Responsible Four Wheeling

Four-wheel driving is all about adventure.

It gets us off the beaten track, into New Zealand’s back country, and to places most people never see. Whether it’s a river run, a high-country weekend, a snow trip or a West Coast track, our aim is simple: have fun and get everyone home safely.

More Than Just a Drive

Christchurch 4WD Club is more than a group of vehicles heading out for the day.

We organise trips, support new members, share experience, provide training, and encourage safe recovery practices. The club also carries public liability insurance for club activities and works to maintain good relationships with landowners, DOC and other organisations.

These things help protect access to the places we enjoy.

Looking After the Places We Visit

Many of our trips cross farms, forests, conservation land and riverbeds. We want to leave a good impression wherever we go.

That means we:

  • Stay on existing tracks where possible.
  • Leave gates exactly as we found them.
  • Respect stock, landowners and other track users.
  • Take our rubbish home.
  • Keep noise and dust down near homes, huts and campsites.
  • Leave campsites tidy.

Looking After Each Other

Nobody is expected to know everything.

New members are encouraged to ask questions, and experienced members are usually happy to share what they know. When things get tricky, we work together.

Our trips are not about proving who has the biggest tyres or the most modified truck. They are about enjoying the day, learning a few things, and having some good stories to tell afterwards.

Be Prepared

Before heading away, take a few minutes to check:

  • Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and other essential fluid levels.
  • Tyres and tyre pressures.
  • Recovery gear.
  • UHF radio.
  • Clothing, food and drinking water.

If you are unsure about anything, ask. Someone in the club will be happy to help.

We all join the club for the same reason — to enjoy four-wheel driving.

By driving responsibly, respecting the places we visit and looking after one another, we help keep the adventure going for years to come.
